GRADING POLICY

Overview: This is a studio art class that greatly depends upon participation, therefore attendance and punctuality are two of the most important aspects of this class. Students who are absent or tardy miss the opportunity to develop and practice skills that are at the heart of the curriculum. Make up work can never fully substitute for the classroom experience!

EXAMPLES OF ABSENCES THAT ARE
NOT EXCUSED...

PART II: Notes, Yellow Slips, ID’s, etc.

PROCEDURE FOR PERIOD 1: NOTES FOR ABSENCES: or yellow slips should be placed in the designated tray. It is your responsibility to pick up new or signed yellow slips from the tray at the end of the period. Please realize that your note must be written with one of the state approved reasons for being absent. The most common of these are: personal illness, court order (attach paperwork) & death in the family. (Please read the county guidelines carefully for who is covered under death in the family). Any notes presented with reasons other than the State Approved reasons will result in an UNEXCUSED yellow slip. (Note: family emergency, personal problems, family business, babysitting, weddings, vacation, etc, are NOT state approved reasons.)

BUS SLIPS for late legal arrivals must have your name, and the stamped time and date. Place in the above tray.

PERIODS 2-7: Please place your yellow slip in the blue tray on my
desk marked "NOTES". It is your responsibility to pick it up on the
way out of class.

PERIOD 8: Please place your yellow slip in the blue tray on my desk
marked "notes". It will not be returned to you.

OTHER STUFF FOR ME TO SIGN: Progress reports, sports reports, field trip forms, or any other kind of form I need to read and sign also go in the designated tray. It’s your job to pick them up at the end of class. Please be responsible for getting these forms to me on time. DO NOT interrupt other classes with these items.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT “Official School Absences” and your responsibility:

Many times students are part of a planned school event, field trip, SGA event, Cheerleader activity or sports/team event. These are considered excused, however, if you have homework or other assignments due the day of these events it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to hand it in prior to leaving the premises. This means, if you have a baseball game during your afternoon class, your homework is still due that day! If you reported to the building for any reason you are responsible for handing in any work due that day! Follow the procedure above to see what you missed.
Other than planned, school approved activities there are no reasons to be out of class. I expect you to BE IN CLASS...not making up tests, finishing work for another class, etc. (NOTE: The only person who can excuse you from class is me! Ask first..and if you are in good standing in this class, chances are I will say yes!)
4. Period One Students only: Need a Temporary ID? It’s your responsibility to let me know you need an ID if I don’t catch it! Bring it to my attention after the Warm Up.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT
COMPUTER GRAPHICS

What about the Journal?
While you will occasionally have other outside assignments, the Journal is the main homework for this class. It is an important part of the creative process and will be considered 25% of your overall grade. Your journal will include drawings, collage and written information. Each journal assignment will be an important part of our process, either as preparation for an upcoming assignment, as an investigation of techniques or artistic styles we will be using, or perhaps as a reflection of an event or project. More information about journal requirements can be found in this website!

This grading policy has been approved by Mr. Sylvester Conyers, Principal of Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

What is included in
PROJECTS, PAPERWORK & PORTFOLIO?

Twenty-five percent of your grade comes from this category, which includes the following:

  1. Projects- meaning any artwork, hands-on assignments, or collaborative class
project (on or off the computer)
  2. Paperwork- meaning any written work, tests, notebook work or checks, warm-ups and homework
  3. Portfolio-You will create and maintain an electronic portfolio that contains ALL your work. Be aware that this is a cumulative portfolio. Each nine weeks, the portfolio will be worth more points, as you add the work (and the points earned) from each successive nine weeks. (Note to CG2/Ap students: there will be additional portfolio activities designed to meet the requirements of the College Board. All students will be expected to complete the portfolio as part of the class curriculum, whether or not they choose to submit the portfolio for grading.)

CLASSROOM RULES
It is important that we have a working understanding of how things operate in this room for several reasons:

First, it will help you keep your grade as high as possible! By following the classroom rules and procedures you insure that you will keep all of your participation points. Failure to follow the rules will result in loss of points. ("Forgetting" is not a valid excuse. As young adults (many of whom are entrusted with a car!) it is your responsibility to be aware of the rules and remember to follow them. Your grade depends upon it.

Second, it makes things flow smoothly and help us get to the point where being in the classroom is a pleasant and happy place to be!

Third, it is vitally important that we take care of the technology in the room. It is costly and can be easily injured by inappropriate actions. Make yourself fully aware of the rules and procedures for this room.

1. Be in your assigned seat, ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
Please do not come to my desk at the beginning of class with questions unless it is an emergency.
2. Do not talk during class. Hold all unnecessary talking until after class, or until the teacher indicates that talking is appropriate for the task.
3. Begin the warm-up immediately. Check for instructions on the overhead. In order to earn credit, warm ups must be accomplished within the first few minutes of class, before the lesson begins.
4. Enter the classroom wearing your ID properly. Students who have to be held at the door to find, put on, or uncover an ID will lose daily participation points. Additionally, students are not permitted to log on to the computers at ERHS without a valid ID or temporary ID. (No ID =loss of participation points for the day.)
5. Do not bring food, drink or liquids of any kind into the classroom. This includes cosmetics and lotions. Leave these items on the table provided by the door.
6. Handle the computers with care!!! Do not bump or jar the computer or touch the monitor screen with your fingers.). Also, be careful that you place the keyboard & mouse out of harms way when you are not using it.
7. Adhere to the Code of Conduct and be mindful of The Roosevelt Way:
Respect, Responsibility, Integrity & Kindness! The reality is if you are polite and patient you have a much better chance of having success with whatever you want. Everyone responds better to kindness.
8. Move carefully in the classroom! We have delicate equipment and many stools, cords, etc.
9. Personal electronic devices must be off and out of sight! (If you are asked to put away an electronic device, assume that points have been deducted from the daily participation grade!)
10. Back up your work weekly! Don't be caught short! Hardrives crash, and it is your responsibility to be sure all your work is protected!

TESTING

TESTING RULES & THE STUDENT INTEGRITY POLICY

Students will also be required to sign (or write) the Integrity Policy prior to any test.
This will include a statement that they did not give or receive help in any form. ALL WORK TO BE GRADED is included in the Integrity Policy. Violation of any part of the Integrity Policy will result in a zero on the assignment or test. Refer to your Integrity Policy for details.

In this class, you are expected to do your own work.. Here is a partial list of some of the things that will be considered cheating: (1) Sharing of work, (2) doing work for someone else to turn in, (3) sharing and/or copying any information such as test answers, homework, classwork or warmups,
(4) turning in work, projects or papers that have previously been turned in to another class for grading or credit,
(5) using electronic devices (phones, computers, etc.) to get information during a test or graded activity (except where allowed), etc
.
These and other violations will result in a zero for both parties. It may also result in further disciplinary action.
Infractions will be reported to advisers of any team, organization, sport or honors organizations to which the student belongs or participates in.
And it’s OK to say NO. If someone asks to view your classwork or homework for the purpose of copying, just say no. Tell the other student you will not jeopardize your grade, or your academic integrity standing for anyone. Remember that a real friend would’t ask! See me privately if you have any problems with this issue!

TEN RULES FOR TEST TAKING:

During a test, quiz or exam the following rules will be in effect. Failure to follow the rules will result in a zero. There are no “second chances” during a test!

1. Come to class prepared with BOTH pencil and pen. Many tests will be scantron, necessitating a pencil. It is your responsibility to come ready for the test. Scantrons taken in pen will not be scored, and a zero will result.
2. Do not talk, speak aloud, use sign language or communicate in any way.
3. Eyes must be kept strictly on your desk, your test and/or your computer screen. Looking at your neighbor or his/her work is considered a form of communication.
4. All materials except writing utensils must be put away during the test and not touched until the test is over. During a test or quiz, unless it it clearly written on the test, no notes, notebooks or any other written or digital
information may be used. Do not get into notebooks, bookbags, purses, cellphones, etc., during the test.
Computers must be logged off unless otherwise instructed.
5. Electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, etc.) may not be on or visible during the exam.
6. If you have a question, raise your hand and wait patiently for the teacher to come to you. Do not leave your seat or speak out.
7. When you are finished, raise your hand and wait patiently for your test to be collected. Remain seated and quiet until the test is over.Do not raise your hand unless it is an emergency. Do not ask for a pass.
8. Students are to remain seated for the entire period, or until Ms. Cunningham has verbally indicated that the test is over and that students are free to move around. STAY SEATED!
9. When the test is completed, you will know it is over because Ms. Cunningham will say:
“Everyone has completed the test and you are now free to move around and speak”.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

Classroom procedures are just as important and just as binding as rules!

PART I: ABSENCES & MAKE UP WORK:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up the work. Remember that according to the county policy, you have exactly as many days as you were out to make up the work. This applies to homework or any other work due while you were absent, which includes practice time using the computers. Skill building is an important part of the class. In most cases, I would expect that 1/2 a period is enough time to make up the work or practice time. )While computer work is expected to be made up within the time allowed by the policy, I am open to some flexibility with students who demonstrate a sincere desire to be conscientious about their work. Students should see me on an individual basis to schedule make up time if necessary.) If make up time is not done, a zero for participation for that day will result.

Follow these steps:

1. Go online to the website for information. Check the calendar to see what we did in class.
2. Check the HANDOUTS webpage and the ARCHIVE DOCS if you've missed any handouts.
3. See me before school or during the second half of my planning period to get any information you may have missed.
3. Come to the Graphics Lab for make up time. Because this is a skills based class, you are expected to make up time and practice. This is how you recover the participation points lost when you are absent.

With prior notice, the Graphics Lab is open prior to school for 30-45 minutes most days. After school is also a possibility, if Ms. C. knows you are coming. You may also sign up to come in during the second half of your lunch. Pick up a pass to the Graphics Lab one day prior to coming for lunch.

PART III: HOMEWORK and JOURNALS
Homework: is DUE at the beginning of the period. Turn homework (except Journals) in to the designated tray as you enter the classroom, on your way to your seat. This tray will disappear shortly after the tardy bell rings. Homework submitted after this time will not be accepted. Homework left anywhere else, including my desk, will be not graded. Late homework will not be accepted and will be counted as zero.

About Journals: JOURNAL assignments are 25% of your grade, therefore it is important
that you do your best and turn them in on time. As with any homework assignment, late homework is not accepted.
Each week, you will receive a journal assignment. The due date is the following day, unless otherwise announced. Journal assignments are an OVERNIGHT assignment.
(I may however, choose to have you bring them in on another day so that we can look at them together. This is called a class critique.) Students are expected to have the journal finished and ready to evaluate the day after the assignment is given. Also, be aware that any day you are in school you must make arrangements for your journal to be turned in on time. Sports events, trips to the nurse, SGA activities and other school activities do not keep homework from being due! (If you are too ill to make it to class and must report to the nurses office, please ask the nurse to send her student aide to me with your homework.)

PART IV: OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. PASS TO THE GRAPHICS LAB: You can pick up a pre-printed pass from the box on my desk. Fill it out with your name, the date you wish to come and time and leave it in the tray with yellow slips. I will sign it. You are welcome to come to the lab any day it is open to work, however if it is during another class period your station may not be available. Be sure you’ve planned in advance by putting your work on a CD or jumpdrive so that you can use one of the side stations to work. Do not bring visitors.
2. BACK UP YOUR WORK!!! It is your responsibility to back up your work, either by writing CD’s or using a jumpdrive or using the H-drive!!. Hard drives fail! Don’t risk all your work by not following the required procedure to back up each week! Any ungraded work must be redone if work is lost due to not being backed up! (It happens to some unlucky person every year!!!)
2. WET STUFF: Leave wet umbrellas and coats over on the side of the classroom. Feel free to hang them on a chair...but NOT on the large tables.
3. CAREFUL OF ARTWORK! Be mindful of artwork laid out on the student tables! It takes time and money to print...and injury can occur from moving items or stacking things on top of artwork. Don’t do it! Be respectful of other peoples work and handle it with care! Check with your teacher for help.
4. Remember that it is the teacher’s job to answer the door. It’s a big room. If Ms. Cunningham doesn't’t hear the knock, please call her attention to it. Do NOT answer the door.
5.Do not borrow from my desk or anywhere in the room without asking. You MAY use items on the Student Work tables. And there is always tissue and paper towels for your convenience.
6. If you are illegally tardy, sign the tardy log. Write neatly, and place the date and time in the area provided. Failure to sign in will result in an unexcused absence!
7. DO NOT MOVE STOOLS unless you check with Ms. Cunningham first! It is dangerous and hazardous to the equipment. If you have a need, see me! (I don’t like the stools either, but we are stuck with them until sometime in the future. Make do!)
8. HALL PASSES: In general, I do not give out hall passes unless it is an emergency. Don’t plan to have too many (emergencies). Use your class change time for personal business. If you have a medical reason
that necessitates having to leave the room often, please see me. Passes will not be issued
to go to your locker or take care of personal business.
9. Do not use the back door to enter or leave the classroom at any time.
It is open strictly for ventilation and will be closed permanently if this becomes an issue.
10. Do not bring balloons to the classroom. Static electricity is the enemy of computers!
11. TLC...Let me know if you need TLC today....We all have those days!
12.
