ESOL
Department Course Descriptions

English E.S.O.L. 1 With E.S.O.L. 1 Elective 
Prerequisites:  county placement
The course English E.S.O.L. 1 grants grade level English credit and is to be scheduled as a double period with E.S.O.L. 1 Elective which grants one elective credit. These courses together develop the beginning English language skills of limited English proficient students in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  These skills require control of the sound system, grammar, vocabulary and the social and cultural situations in which they are used.
Prerequisite:  None
 
English E.S.O.L. 2 With E.S.O.L. 2 Elective
Prerequisites ESOL 1 or county placement
The course English E.S.O.L. 2 Elective that grants one elective credit.  These courses are for Limited English Proficient students whose skills are above those of students in English E.S.O.L 1.  Therse courses will develop the students' English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Prerequisite:  Pass English E.S.O.L. 1 or county placement
 
English E.S.O.L. 3 With E.S.O.L. 2 Elective
Prerequisites ESOL 2 or county placement
The course English E.S.O.L. 3 grants grade level English credit and is to be scheduled as a double period with E.S.O.L. 3 Elective that grants one elective credit.  These courses are for Limited English Proficient students whose skills are above those of students in English E.S.O.L. 2.  These courses will develop the students' English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. 
 
Transitional English
Prerequisites: ESOL 3 or county placement  This course grants grade level English credit.  It is a course which focuses on English skills for language minority students who are ready to exit E.S.O.L. English classes and transition to mainstream grade level English courses.  This course includes instruction in the language arts skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Literature is taught for its own sake not only as a springboard for composition writing.  In this course, students should begin to understand and use the elements of style and begin their development of critical literacy evaluation.
 
Language of Math
Prerequisites:  county placement
This course grants elective credit.  It is designed for limited English proficient students who have limited or interrupted mathematics education and whose mathematics placement criteria indicates a lack of achievement on skills included in the middle grades mathematics program.
 
ESOL Pre-Conceptual Physics
Prerequisites:  Concurrent enrollment in ESOL 1
This year long, single period course is designed to teach academic language used in the content area of Science.  Learning strategies, basic study skills, and classroom survival skills for American classrooms are taught to the Limited English Proficient students enrolled in this course.  Students must be identified for the class by ESOL staff.
 
ESOL Pre-World History
Prerequisites:  Concurrent enrollment in ESOL 1
This year long, single period course is designed to teach academic language used in the content area of History.  Learning strategies, basic study skills, and classroom survival skills for American classrooms are taught to the Limited English Proficient students enrolled in this course.  Students must be identified for the class by ESOL staff.
