English Department Requirements

English/Language Arts 9 (1 credit single mod)
This class - offered on 3 levels - examines major works of literature from each genre - poetry, drama, novel, short story, and essay. The emphasis is on close examination of texts and the construction of logical arguments about how language is used to create meaning.

English/Language Arts 10 (1 credit, single or double mod)
This class - offered on 3 levels - examines major works in world literature. The emphasis is on close examination of texts and the construction of logical arguments about how language is used to create meaning.

English/Language Arts 11 (1 credit, single or double mod)
This class - offered on 3 levels - surveys major works in American literature. The emphasis is on close examination of texts and the construction of logical arguments about how language is used to create meaning.

A.P. Literature (1 credit, single mod)
This class involves a close examination of texts with a focus on major works of fiction. It is designed to prepare the college-bound student to receive college credit through performance on the A.P. Literature exam.

A.P. Language (1 credit, single mod)
This class involves a close examination of texts with a focus on short works of non-fiction. It is designed to prepare the college-bound student to receive college credit through performance on the A.P. Language exam. Students who take this course in the 11th grade must take A.P. Literature in their 12th grade year.

Pacesetter English (1 credit, single or double mod)
This class, created by the College Board, focuses on contemporary literature and is designed to give college-level experiences and preparation for students who are college-bound but not ready for Advanced Placement English.

English/Language Arts 12 (1 credit, single or double mod)
This class surveys literature from Britain and its former empire.

English Department Electives

Drama 1 (1 credit, single mod) *
This course provides students with an introduction to the fundamentals of acting and stage design. Improvisation, scene work, and monologue work are featured.

Drama 2 (1 credit, single mod) *
This course allows experienced drama students to further develop and improve on their knowledge of acting and stage design.

Drama 3 (1 credit, single mod) *
This course allows drama students who have completed Drama 2 to further refine their acting skills. Advanced experimental theater projects allow for student-written and student-directed work.

Journalism I (1 credit, single mod)
This course provides students with fundamental news writing and layout skills so that they will become more efficient staff members of ERHS's newspaper, The Raider Review, and its yearbook, The Valkyrie.

Journalism 2 - Literary Magazine (1 credit, single mod)
Students in this course both engage in creative writing and produce and market ERHS's literary magazine, Freestyle.

Journalism 2- Newspaper (1 credit, single mod)
Students in this course write, design, and market ERHS's newspaper, The Raider Review.

Journalism 2 – Yearbook (1 credit, single mod)
Students in this course write, design, and market ERHS's yearbook, The Valkyrie.
