Department Course Descriptions
 

Lifetime sports, (1/2 credit, single mod)
This semester course will provide learning experiences in a variety of individual and dual sports such as fitness walking, tennis, recreational games, badminton and golf. Opportunities are provided for students to acquire knowledge, skills and an appreciation of lifetime sports that have carry-over value for recreational pursuits.


Team Sports (1/2 credit, single mod)

This semester course will provide learning experiences in team sports such as flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, floor hockey, and lacrosse. Opportunities for leadership skills are developed through organizing, administering and officiating interclass competitions. This course is offered in a coeducational format.


Personal Fitness (1/2 credit, single mod)

This semester course will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop and maintain a lifetime of optimal health and fitness. Students will learn about the components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Activities offered in this course (fitness walking, aerobic dance, weight training, step aerobics, circuit training) center around improving levels of fitness. This course is offered in a coeducational format.


Physical Training (1/2 credit, single mod)

This semester course is designed as a conditioning course for students who wish to improve strength and endurance. Areas that may be explored are physical fitness, circuit training, isometrics, weight training, body mechanics, jogging and/or running and fundamental theories of body conditioning. This course is offered in a coeducational format.


Dance (1/2 credit, single mod)

This semester course consists of the history of dance, theories of movement, fundamentals of movement, and the methods of choreography. Emphasis is placed upon enhancing creativity, developing self-expression, and the employment of movement to music. A variety of rhythmic activities may be included, i.e. tap, ballet, folk, square, social, jazz modern and fitness dancing. This course is taught in a coeducational format.


Sports Medicine (I/2 credit, single mod)
This course focuses on sports medicine and athletic training. It opens a new dimension to secondary school physical education and health. It provides for the scientific examination of the physiology of exercise and the skillful application of first aid, taping rehabilitation, care and prevention of athletic emergency injuries and CPR training. This course is open to students who have completed the required Health Issues course.
