Using Rhythm
(Principle of Design)
JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT:
Due Date: Monday, Jan. 25, 2008
Critique Date: Thursday, Jan. 28, 2008
What is Rhythm: In simple terms, it means repeating an element in an artwork to make it seem more vibrant, or to suggest movement. The idea behind rhythm is to keep the viewers eye moving around the artwork, and to increase visual excitement. You eye is attracted to repeated shapes!
Two main types of rhythm are:
variety and repetition.
See examples to the right.
Preparation: Go to Artlex.com and read about rhythm. Choose one or two types of rhythm that appeals to you. Check out the examples.
Requirements: Create a journal page that centers around your concentration theme. Consciously incorporate rhythm in a way that brings visual vibration or movement to the page. Be sure to include all the usual requirements:
* Ink(no pencil) for drawing
*Layered page (bg, mg, fg and carefully constructed layers of information).
*Meaningful text (not words)
*Fully designed page
*Color
*Clear center of attention
*Balanced; well composed
*COLLAGE: Correctly used, to enhance color and texture. DO NOT just stick something on the page to "be" collage. Do the job!
*Finished quality! Ready to scan!
